Fill an ice cube tray or part of it with the liquid – not too full since water expands when it freezes - and cover it with plastic wrap. Insert toothpicks in the right places to be the “stick.” The plastic wrap will keep it from floating away.
How many sticks will you need for your tray? Using one-to-one correspondence, let the child count the rectangles and then count out the toothpicks.
Talk about how the water changed shape. Let one rectangle melt - talk about how the shape changed again.
