Description

Little pillows of fresh bread
ADULTS MUST DO THE FRYING

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp dry yeast
  • 1⁄2 c warm water (not hot)
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 t oil
  • 2 1⁄2 c bread flour-not cake or dumpling flour

Instructions

Put the warm (not hot) water into a large bowl, then dissolve the sugar and yeast in it . When it has softened, add oil and salt. Stir in the flour with a wooden spoon until it becomes too difficult to manage. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured board and let it rest--absorbing more of the flour--while you clean out and oil the bowl. Knead the dough, working in additional flour as needed, until it is smooth and elastic (about 15 minutes).Let child/ren have a small piece of dough to knead. Return the dough to the bowl and cover with a damp towel. Leave it to rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours until it has doubled in bulk. Let the children pinch the dough into thin little round pieces. Sprinkle with a tiny bit of salt. AN ADULT CAN FRY THESE ONE AT A TIME IN A SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL - IN A WOK OR FRYPAN.

Notes

Children love making these although they cannot be allowed to actually fry them. They are delicious fresh from the pan and they can be stored to eat later if there are any left. Fried bread becomes more chewy the next day.
