Bread is usually made from the grain of wheat, though other grains can be used. When you are at the supermarket, show the children what whole wheat grains look like. They look similiar to rice grains but taste quite different. You might show them barley grains as well.
At home you can let the children play with different flours by putting some on a dark tray and letting them draw in it.
Pounded grains make flour. Flour plus water will make a hard bread when it is baked, but you might not like eating it. To make bread softer we make it fluffy by adding yeast which grows while the dough is kept warm. The risen bread will stay fluffy while it is being baked which means the resultant bread will be softer on your teeth!
If you want to make bread dough you will need a convential oven to bake it- otherwise you can fry small pieces of dough in a wok. This is definitely an adult-only activity, but one that the whole family will enjoy eating!
Bread is very easy to make but requires long resting times. Keep this in mind when you plan the start time and the final eating time. Impatient children need to be told "If you start now, it won't be ready until...."
These recipes are designed to be simple enough for children to do- they are not supposed to be gourmet recipes for adults to use. The results will please the children if they are allowed free rein- but don't expect them to produce the bread/pizza you want to serve company.
