One loaf or two pizza bases
Put the warm (not hot) water into a large bowl, then dissolve the sugar and yeast in it . When it has softened, add oil and salt. Stir in the flour with a wooden spoon until it becomes too difficult to manage. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured board and let it rest--absorbing more of the flour--while you clean out and oil the bowl. Knead the dough, working in additional flour as needed, until it is smooth and elastic (about 15 minutes).Let child/ren have a small piece of dough to knead. Return the dough to the bowl and cover with a damp towel. Leave it to rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours until it has doubled in bulk.
For a Pizza
Divide the dough and pinch out the two halves into large circles. Add topping of your choice (keep it simple for children- tomato sauce and cheese) and bake on baking paper or greased trays at 200 C or 400 degrees F- about 20 minutes. The bread must be baked, so if your child made the bases very thick, they will take longer in the oven
For a Loaf
Punch the dough down with floured hands. Put the loaf in a warm place to rise again- about one hour. Preheat oven to 200C or 400F-degrees. When the loaf is ready put it in the hot oven for the first 15 minutes, then turn the oven down to 175C/ 350F degrees for another 15-20 minutes. Take the bread out of the pan; it should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. Allow it to cool thoroughly on a rack before slicing.
do not use dumpling or cake flour; it won't work
You will need a conventional oven for this recipe
